Can you tell us a little bit about yourself to introduce us to you and what you do?

Hi, I am Anna, I work as a TA at my local first school based in Newcastle upon Tyne. I shall be 50 this coming August. I am 23 years married and mother of our boys Felix, 19, and Hugo, 17. My husband Martin is a champion of all I do, e.g., he enables me to follow my dreams by taking the load from me. He’s also a great bike mechanic. Runner for over twenty years, turned Triathlete. Gym goer, lover of Yoga and cold water showers, passionate fell walker in the nearby Lake District and general lover of the great outdoors.

How did you get into triathlons?

After the birth of Felix I decided to take up running. Following three marathons, at least ten Great North Runs, many park runs, local 10k and 5k events and more serious Cross Country Runs with my local harriers club (Gosforth Harriers) I wanted to push myself further, deciding to take up Triathlon. This is more diverse, and I believe will lead to fewer injuries.

Where are your favourite spots to run, swim or ride?

I run along the Northumberland coast and nearby tracks and trails, in addition to my ongoing harrier runs. Love a hill and the cross country events!

Cycling takes in Tranwell Woods and Matfen and indeed many parts of Northumberland.

Training for ‘open water’ swimming takes in the nearby lakes in Northumberland, QE2 and Ladyburn.

What do you most enjoy about getting out and training?

I enjoy the camaraderie of like minded people, making friends for life. Training and competing is also a great endorphin maker!

What has been your most memorable competition?

My most memorable Tri competition to date was a Half Ironman, taking place in Nottingham. This was because it was my first Triathlon race and I was so proud of the consistent training and dedication I had given to the event.

Let’s talk gear, where should we shop and what do we need to get started?

  • Watch: Garmin Fenix 6s,
  • Shoes: For longer runs and training: Hoka Clifton 8 running shoes, and for road races: Nike Air Zoom Alphafly Next
  • Your local running shop is the best place to start, where the staff are knowledgeable on all things. Cycle Art is my local bike shop, again very friendly and passionate on all things cycling.
  • Bike and bike fit necessary, Tri suit, helmet, Oakley sunglasses, race belt, cycling shoes, cleats, clip in pedals to name a few of the endless list of things required to be a serious Triathlete.
  • Costume, wetsuit, goggles, swim cap, camo dry robe.

Do you have any tips for anyone wanting to get into triathlons?

My tip would be to join a club and get involved with events and like-minded people. There is nothing like peer pressure to inspire you to keep going! Consistency really is key!

So, what's next for you?

This year I will be representing GB in my age group in the European and World Triathlons, held in Poland and Abu Dhabi respectively. This is a fulfilment of my ambition and goals, which I am so looking forward to.

Last but not least... what's your favourite flavour of fava beans?!

The whole family have just done a taste test and overall the highest scoring Fava Bean was the Chilli & Lemon. However, my personal favourite was the Sea Salt & Cider Vinegar. Love the packaging too! The smaller size would be great to snack on during events, and most importantly like the way you're championing British beans.
